It’s that time of the year again, where we are all winding down, looking forward to spending time with our loved ones and putting up all our festive decorations.
But with the new decade coming quickly around the corner, now is the perfect time to be productive in our careers!
If not now, when?
Next January? February? Or maybe next Christmas, when we have blinked and realised, we haven’t made any changes!
Now I bet you are thinking that December is not exactly a month where employers are actively looking for new people and you might be right!
However, this doesn’t mean we should slow down. Instead we should be focusing our mindsets on the next steps in our career.
So, this begs the question how do we do this?
Well, first we need to be asking ourselves:
Am I happy at my current employment?
What do I want to do next in my career?
Am I ready and qualified to move to a new opportunity?
Focusing on the middle question, something I hear all the time is ‘I am looking to gain more experience in my career’.
This is a good goal, but we need to be asking more specific questions like ‘How am I going to get more experience?’
In the words of Abraham Lincoln “Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”
The message here is planning and preparation are some of our greatest tools within our power. Sometimes we need to first assess our situation and be pro-active in a different way, so we can be more efficient than just ‘powering through’.
So, it’s not about applying for jobs in December but there are many other things you can do to get ahead for 2020!
Start Networking Now!
Platforms like LinkedIn are a great source to expand your network. However, you need to be doing more than just connecting with people! Try to be an active member so your visibility increases! This means engage with peoples posts by liking and commenting on them to start building more meaningful connections!
Update Your CV!
Whilst you have some spare time over the Christmas period, try to focus some time on updating your CV. This will prepare you for that job application in the new year!
Do Your Research!
Is there a company you would like to work for? By looking at their website you can gain an understanding of their mission, goals, services and products. You may also find you have connections via your social media platforms of people who work for that company that you could talk to. Being prepared in interviews about the background of a company can really make you stand out!
Keep A Positive Approach!
Having a positive mindset can really improve your chances of being hired! Employers really do notice a confident and optimistic energy in an interview, and they like it! Don’t be disheartened by not getting a certain job, it just means there is a better one for you! And take away that you have been given valuable interview experience! A positive attitude will also help motivate you to continue your job searching and potentially find opportunities you may not have found before!
