Have you ever heard ‘The Elephant Rope‘ story?

A man was passing a group of elephants when he suddenly stopped. He was confused by the fact that these strong and large creatures were being held by only a small piece of rope, which was tied to their leg.

They could have easily broken free at any point but for some reason they did not.

When the man saw a nearby trainer, he asked why these animals just simply stood there and made no attempt to break the rope.

Mammal, Elephant, Wildlife, Animal, Nature, Wild

The trainer replied “when they are very young and much smaller, we use this same sized rope to tie them, and it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never attempt to break free.”

The moral of this story is like the elephants, we sometimes believe we cannot do something because perhaps we failed at it once, or because we have never even tried.

Can you think of anything in your life that might relate to this?

Our minds are the most powerful human tool we possess, and if we are able to alter how we think, we can change ourselves and our lives!

What if we can change ‘I can’t’ into ‘I can’?

6 Ways to Help Create a Successful Mindset

1. Develop a Growth Mindset

There are usually two types of people. Those with Fixed Mindsets and those with Growth Mindsets. Let’s say, there was an opportunity to try something new at work. Those with Fixed Mindsets would believe they just couldn’t do it or give up very easily, whereas Growth Mindsets would work really hard, use strategies to aid learning, and keep trying until they got it right.

2. Don’t be afraid to fail

If you believe you are going to fail, chances are you will. The number one reason why people don’t try something new or don’t succeed is fear of failing. But in the words of Thomas Edison ‘I haven’t failed – I’ve just found 10,000 that won’t work’. We have to learn to embrace our mistakes or and take risks in order to push ourselves to be successful in the future.

3. Be Positive

I once got told that what you put into the world comes back to you. Our beliefs control our behaviour and our behaviour determines our success. We can’t control every situation but what we can control is how we choose to look and act towards that situation. Believe in yourself and your abilities and you cannot fail. Your professional success will not come easy but by looking at it with a positive perception will make it easier to set goals and achieve them.

4. Understand your strengths and weaknesses

Successful individuals have a good idea of who they are, what they want and how they are going to get it. It is impossible to be good at everything, but it is possible to be great at what you are already good at. It is also very important to understand our weaknesses in order to minimise them as much as we can. Be your best self and not somebody you aren’t.

5. Be Productive-

If you were going on a holiday, how would you do it? You would plan how much money to save, where you are going, and how you are going to get there. Successful people set short-term goals in order to achieve their long-term goal. They are also selective about how many tasks they take on at one time to make sure they are completed correctly. Having a clear vision and a strategic method about your future is definitely a strong mindset.

6. Expand your comfort zone

A person who thinks he already knows everything is someone who knows nothing. Sometimes it necessary to take a step outside our comfort zone in order to discover new things about ourselves. If we don’t its likely we will end up with a Fixed Mindset and our success will likely start to decline. We only regret the chances we didn’t take right?
